I create stories

Everything I do is a part of a bigger cluster of works. Every drawing, every word written, every installation made, everything is part of an umbrella of creations. Every collection is part of a subject, of a story. 'The goodbye girl' is a ghost story. 'Escaping a frozen lake' is an adventure film of a lonely man, content with his place in life. 'Norman' is about a man looking at the world, and not interacting with it.

Every collection hopes to become a film at some point.
sometimes these stories become something else. installation, painting, drawing ...

Biography

"Director Robbe Vervaeke graduated from the School of Arts | KASK Ghent with the animated short film 'Erszebet' (2008), often described as a "phantasmagoric nightmare in oil paint".
Continuing to refine his unique approach to the medium while working on his debut film 'Norman', the film went on to successfully tour the international short film festival circuit, taking home the 'Jean-Luc Xibérras Award
for Best Debut Prize' at the prestigious Annécy International Animated Film Festival in France (2013).

Synopsis
A young artist is working on a portrait when an unexpected moment of frustration and doubt shatters his inspiration. Distracted by his own curiosity, he suddenly finds himself engulfed by a grande parade. Buzzing characters spirited from contemporary pop-culture and art-history crystallize out of the air. Unable to resist the charismatic pull of this vast and grotesque world, he joins in on an exploration through his own colorful ambitions. But when Pablo Picasso’s terrific charisma ends up threatening everything he holds dear, he learns to push back in order to rediscover his own voice.

"'Fighting Pablo' is a document of research. In the last couple of months of production, the paint almost started to animate itself. Every touch of oil on the glassplates was an anekdote of paint, uniquely my own."

You have to watch out for strange people. you never know what they are capable of.

Norman is a nervous man, wandering to alone through a large city. As we all do, he's looking at things, staring at the world around him. Details of the people around him grow into small obsessions.
He starts playing with the fine line between staring and moving. at some point a small detail becomes fascinating, maybe even irresistible.

Norman acts on his impulses, becoming a dangerous man in a strange city, not completely responsible for the consequences of his actions.

This project was made entirely in Dutch.
A video-essay based on 'Perfect Light', a comision for Wattou art festival 2010. It is a painted commentary on 'perfect light', a poem by Ted Hughes.
the entire idea is rooted in the thought to have the camera's do the painting. As an expressionist, accidentally discovering his colours, tones and pallet, I try to take away any sense of control I may have had over oil-painted animation and have the camera's break my work, in order to achieve a completely different sense of painted touch.

"
There you are, in all your innocence,
Sitting among your daffodils, as in a picture
Posed as for the title: ‘Innocence’.
Perfect light in your face lights it up
Like a daffodil. Like any one of those daffodils
It was to be your only April on earth
Among your daffodils. In your arms,
Like a teddy bear, your new son,
Only a few weeks into his innocence,
Mother and infant, as in the Holy portrait.
And beside you, laughing up at you,
Your daughter, barely two. Like a daffodil
You turn your face down to her, saying something.
Your words were lost in the camera.

And the knowledge
Inside the hill on which you are sitting.
A moated fort hill, bigger than your house,
Failed to reach the picture. While your next moment,
Coming towards you like an infantryman
Returning slowly out of no-man’s-land,
Bowed under something, never reached you—
Simply melted into the perfect light.
"
